If your teeth are stained and you’re looking to restore their appearance, Zoom! teeth whitening treatment could be the answer you’re looking for.
When it comes to restoring the appearance of your teeth, Zoom! teeth whitening is effective for whitening teeth up to 8 shades. And it can be done in just one hour.
Zoom! teeth whitening is a bleaching process used to brighten discolouration of dentin and enamel. Your teeth can become stained due to drinking tea, soft drink, red wine or from smoking. Ageing and certain medications can also affect the appearance of your teeth.
The whitening process uses a hydrogen peroxide gel to whiten the teeth. The effects of which are accelerated by a chairside light.
The Redlands Gentle Dental Care team would recommend having a scale and clean prior to whitening treatment in order to improve results.
Zoom! teeth whitening is available as an in-office procedure and a take-home kit.
History of teeth whitening
The teeth whitening procedure was invented—by accident—in the 1960s by dentist William Klusmier. This dentist told his patient to use carbamide peroxide, an antiseptic, to help heal his gums.
Using the antiseptic with an orthodontic positioner overnight, the dentist found not only did it heal the gums it also whitened the patient’s teeth. After five years of presenting his findings the practice of modern teeth whitening started to become more and more widely used.
We say modern because there is some evidence Egyptians 4000 years ago used a whitening paste (ground pumice stone and wine vinegar) to whiten teeth.
Ancient Romans apparently used urine. Yes. They used urine for the ammonia which acts as a bleaching agent.
During the 17th century people went to the barber for the hair and teeth. Some sources say the barber would file down teeth and apply acid to whiten teeth. While this made for whiter teeth, it eroded tooth enamel and led to decay.
What teeth whitening treatment is right for you
When you visit Redlands Gentle Dental Care we will assess your oral health and determine the best course of action for you and your smile.
If you are looking for a quick and effective treatment, our in-office Zoom! teeth whitening treatment may be the best choice for you. If, however, you would prefer to whiten your teeth in the convenience of your own home we also offer take-home options. The take home options take longer—up to two weeks—but are still effective methods of brightening your smile.
When am I not a suitable candidate for Zoom! teeth whitening?
If the cause of your discolouration is not cosmetic, that is, if your teeth are discoloured because of decay or trauma, then Zoom! teeth whitening will not work.
If your teeth are blackened because of either decay or trauma you may require either a filling, root canal or porcelain veneer. However, the best course of action will depend on the health of your tooth.
