How often should I change my toothbrush?

It’s easy to tell when you should replace worn out shoes or clothes but how often should you change your toothbrush?

Every three months

The Australian Dental Association’s Oral Health Committee has recommended replacing your toothbrush when the bristles have worn down, usually every couple of months. If your bristles are frayed, they won’t clean teeth as effectively and because children often brush more rigorously than adults, they might require their toothbrushes replaced more often.

Consider changing your toothbrush sooner if you have been sick as researchers have discovered that a single toothbrush is loaded with as many as 10 million germs and bacteria. After Illness the toothbrush bristles can store bacteria for a while so be sure to change your brush regularly for maximum effectiveness and practice good oral hygiene, despite the type of toothbrush you’re using.

Types of toothbrushes

There are two types of toothbrushes to consider, manual and electric.

  • Manual toothbrushes are portable and always ready to use, it makes no noise and you have complete control over the pressure.
  • Electric toothbrushes require charging, however, the rotating movement of the bristles make it easier to clean between the teeth and gum line. Many have built in sensors to make sure your brushing long enough and don’t put too much pressure on your teeth and gums.

Choose what feels comfortable to you and makes you want to brush your teeth regularly.

Maintaining Your Toothbrush

Rinse your toothbrush under tap water after you brush to wash away any excess toothpaste and saliva. Then, store the toothbrush in a vertical position, with the bristles positioned so they can air dry. If you store your toothbrush in a closed container this can cause bacteria to build up, so let the bristles of the toothbrush fully dry between each usage.
